Short film
I watched and analysed a short film called "The Bench" it was set in what looked to be the reasonably modern day era shown by surroundings of the park in which the majority of the clip is filmed and the establishing shot also shows tall modern day building clarifying it has been set in the modern day also you could most likely tell by the clothing the characters are wearing specifically David as his coat looks modern-ish but Laura's clothing and hairstyle look kind of old fashioned.
During the clip a reasonable amounts of shots are seen which consist of establishing shot, master shot, over the shoulder shot, long shot, close up and medium shot as well as shot reverse shot structure. The establishing shot sets the scene by showing us the type of area the clips taking place in and the the master shot shows the location of the scene that is going to take place between the actors/actresses and this is at "The Bench" which is also the name of the title. The master shot sets the scene as it shows us they are sitting on a bench in a children's play area in what looks to be a park. In the clip we have an extreme close up of a pair of hands touching each other which belong to David and Laura showing that there relationship was strong and meaning full and that they cared for each other, the close up of there hands magnified that. This clip to me seems to be an emotional clip as it is almost always on a close up shot of either character showing what emotions they are feeling as they were once partners but have both moved on and the close-ups show that they still have feelings for each other just by their expressions , this is good way to show us as we have a constant view of how their faces change whenever something is said and we See how they react to it. In a part of the clip we see the characters hug and it shows the audience this as a long shot and then gives an extreme close up of David's hand on Laura's back showing us the emotions and that he still feels for her. During the clip we have flashbacks which show the two characters when they were younger, we see close ups of both of their faces to give us identification of who they were and then we usually see them touching each other such as holding hands, hugging and kissing all full of emotion and are shown in a variety shots such as a medium close up of them which changes to a close up of them kissing giving us an example of their feelings towards each other. At one time in the scene when we see them hugging it gives us a close up of each face showing emotion of each of them and lets the audience know how each of them feels towards the other, it is clear that Laura is still in lover with David but he has moved on. Shot reverse shot structure is also used and we see it quite a lot as it shows David looking in Laura's eyes and Laura doing the same it shows a lot of emotion from the two characters giving the audience a reaction shot of each character after one speaks and it lets us know how they both feel about what they are saying.
In this paragraph i will be talking about costumes, props, characters and make-up. We see that clip is set in a reasonably modern day era, maybe the 90's, a reason i think this is because of the clothes that the characters are wearing we see both David and Laura are wearing clothes that are a little dated in our time now. David has a big puffy coat on which isn't old fashioned but not a lot of people now wear this type of clothing, the era is then backed up by Laura as her clothes and style are visibly not what modern day women look like, her hairstyle is out of date from the modern day. Laura is wearing whats looks to be a kind of old long coat made of cotton with a furry collar and has short curly hair, with this Laura looks kind of old fashioned. Also Laura doesn't look to have make-up on like a lot of the modern day women do which also backs up when i think it was meant to be set, the characters both speak a little different as well, they speak a little more common like and this seems to fit the time a little better than the modern day. The park is also shown to possibly keep the era a little more modern than what it may have been thought to be as it looks to be a new-ish park.
In this next paragraph i will be talking about editing. Just about the whole clip is shown in black and white this is the part where we see David and Laura in real time and not a flash back. In my eyes this edited of colour is put there to show us that being older is a more dull life than when being young and carefree, this theory is backed up by the fact that when flashbacks are shown of them in their younger days and when they were together they are shown in colour. So overall it seems that being older is dull and is not as easy to find happiness represented by the mood and the editing of colour where in the past when they were younger it was bright and colourful and they were always happy. There is also editing done when showing the past as it shows us them through what looks to be a film playing back and this may backup that it is not set in the modern day and is a little in the past. It could also show that there relationship is old news and is all in the past too.
This paragraph will be about how the clip uses sound. The video uses non diegetic music to set a mood for the audience and lets us know right away that it isn't going to be a happy clip as the music is kind of slow and sets a low tone for the clip right away. Throughout the clip there isn't really any music just the characters talking there are flashes of non diegetic sound when there are flashbacks with is quite happy sounding music as it is showing us that when they were younger they were both happy. Towards the end the music is happier than what it was at the beginning before David and Laura met almost as if they had made their peace between each other and now they know nothing is going to happen between them.
