Music Video Analysis - Basshunter All I Ever Wanted

I have chosen to analyse the video from Basshunter called "All I Ever Wanted" this video is about a group of partners who go on a typical fun filled Holiday. I chose to analyse this video because their music is the type i like and it is a great song with a good video. This song comes across to both male and female audiences of a young age as it a song which can easily be danced to by each sex and the video is also of a stereotypical holiday for a boy and a girl so each can relate to it and enjoy it. The video is easy to identify from the off as it shows the two main characters of the video kissing and the opening line is "All i ever wanted is too see you smiling" this shows that they are in love and because of the man singing the song it seems as though it is what the boy wants for the girl.
I will start off by analysing the camera shots in this video. The video starts off with a master shot of both the main characters kissing setting the scene and letting us know that they are a couple, the scene then switches to them all riding on scooters this is shown using a medium - long shot so they can fit in everyone but this shot shows again who the main characters are because they are the two on the scooter in the middle and closest to the camera the middle spot is stereotypical to the leader and so helps to identify them as the main characters. The video consists mainly of medium shots and groups shots as it is showing the couple and the group, there is a group shot when they are all in the pool having a water fight, this is stereotypical of a group of young adults when on holiday having fun. There are also quite a few close ups in the video usually of the female body which supports Laura Mulvey's theory of the male gaze, these types of shots will attract men to watch this video and these shots can also be seen as showing lack of respect towards. There is a few extreme close ups of a mobile phone once when taking a picture and another look at the text, the phone is shown with the women watching a video of her boyfriend when she receives a text from him explaining, this then gives us a reaction shot of her face which shows she is upset. We also have over the shoulder shots of when they are together which are also close ups showing us their emotion which was laughing or smiling, this gave the impression they were very happy together but can easily fall out like shown and is another stereotypical process which happens with young couples. There are more close ups shown when they are all dancing in the club mainly of the female body again as well as some group shots, again loud music, dancing and drinking are all stereotypical actions of young adults.
In this next paragraph i will talk about costumes, props, make-up actors/actresses. This video is very stereotypical and the costumes are a big part of it as well as the characters, in this video the women are seen mainly in bikinis' short skirts and revealing clothing. All this is stereotypical of young women in one scene we see the main women getting changed in front of her boyfriend trying on many different outfits all equally revealing. This women has also been chosen for these types of videos because of how she looks, she is a very good looking women and is shown as a stereotypical one as in one scene she gets wet and seems to not like it maybe showing she is stuck up but she then lets it go and joins in but it shows a hint of her been full of herself. She has been made to always look good with make-up being used on her as it is in her character to look good and this can be shown by the type of video it is because on holiday they have an excuse to show off her body in the pool and skimpy outfits when going out clubbing. Also in the pool scene there are props used by the boys, water pistols which show that they are a little immature but is also stereotypical of boys to be a little immature.
In this next paragraph i will speak about the editing used in this music video. In this video there are many times when an ellipsis is used as it is a very easy way to pass time, it is used when a scene ends and cuts to another scene the time has changed for example in this video they are riding scooters and then the scene skips and they have reached their destination. Also in the clip they use an action match where the women is starting to walk up the steps to get out of the pool and then a quick cut scene and she is out of the pool. We also have cut scenes to see who is actually singing the song and at the end he is the DJ.
I will now speak about how sound was used in this clip. Throughout most of the clip the people that it is showing cannot hear any of the music as it is non diegetic sound but we can see who is singing it as we get cut shots of him singing every so often. At the end of the clip though they are in a club and can hear the same song we can as we can see the same singer from the cut scenes we saw him in as the DJ and we see him singing the song.

Music video analysis

Short film
I watched and analysed a short film called "The Bench" it was set in what looked to be the reasonably modern day era shown by surroundings of the park in which the majority of the clip is filmed and the establishing shot also shows tall modern day building clarifying it has been set in the modern day also you could most likely tell by the clothing the characters are wearing specifically David as his coat looks modern-ish but Laura's clothing and hairstyle look kind of old fashioned.
During the clip a reasonable amounts of shots are seen which consist of establishing shot, master shot, over the shoulder shot, long shot, close up and medium shot as well as shot reverse shot structure. The establishing shot sets the scene by showing us the type of area the clips taking place in and the the master shot shows the location of the scene that is going to take place between the actors/actresses and this is at "The Bench" which is also the name of the title. The master shot sets the scene as it shows us they are sitting on a bench in a children's play area in what looks to be a park. In the clip we have an extreme close up of a pair of hands touching each other which belong to David and Laura showing that there relationship was strong and meaning full and that they cared for each other, the close up of there hands magnified that. This clip to me seems to be an emotional clip as it is almost always on a close up shot of either character showing what emotions they are feeling as they were once partners but have both moved on and the close-ups show that they still have feelings for each other just by their expressions , this is good way to show us as we have a constant view of how their faces change whenever something is said and we See how they react to it. In a part of the clip we see the characters hug and it shows the audience this as a long shot and then gives an extreme close up of David's hand on Laura's back showing us the emotions and that he still feels for her. During the clip we have flashbacks which show the two characters when they were younger, we see close ups of both of their faces to give us identification of who they were and then we usually see them touching each other such as holding hands, hugging and kissing all full of emotion and are shown in a variety shots such as a medium close up of them which changes to a close up of them kissing giving us an example of their feelings towards each other. At one time in the scene when we see them hugging it gives us a close up of each face showing emotion of each of them and lets the audience know how each of them feels towards the other, it is clear that Laura is still in lover with David but he has moved on. Shot reverse shot structure is also used and we see it quite a lot as it shows David looking in Laura's eyes and Laura doing the same it shows a lot of emotion from the two characters giving the audience a reaction shot of each character after one speaks and it lets us know how they both feel about what they are saying.

In this paragraph i will be talking about costumes, props, characters and make-up. We see that clip is set in a reasonably modern day era, maybe the 90's, a reason i think this is because of the clothes that the characters are wearing we see both David and Laura are wearing clothes that are a little dated in our time now. David has a big puffy coat on which isn't old fashioned but not a lot of people now wear this type of clothing, the era is then backed up by Laura as her clothes and style are visibly not what modern day women look like, her hairstyle is out of date from the modern day. Laura is wearing whats looks to be a kind of old long coat made of cotton with a furry collar and has short curly hair, with this Laura looks kind of old fashioned. Also Laura doesn't look to have make-up on like a lot of the modern day women do which also backs up when i think it was meant to be set, the characters both speak a little different as well, they speak a little more common like and this seems to fit the time a little better than the modern day. The park is also shown to possibly keep the era a little more modern than what it may have been thought to be as it looks to be a new-ish park.
In this next paragraph i will be talking about editing. Just about the whole clip is shown in black and white this is the part where we see David and Laura in real time and not a flash back. In my eyes this edited of colour is put there to show us that being older is a more dull life than when being young and carefree, this theory is backed up by the fact that when flashbacks are shown of them in their younger days and when they were together they are shown in colour. So overall it seems that being older is dull and is not as easy to find happiness represented by the mood and the editing of colour where in the past when they were younger it was bright and colourful and they were always happy. There is also editing done when showing the past as it shows us them through what looks to be a film playing back and this may backup that it is not set in the modern day and is a little in the past. It could also show that there relationship is old news and is all in the past too.
This paragraph will be about how the clip uses sound. The video uses non diegetic music to set a mood for the audience and lets us know right away that it isn't going to be a happy clip as the music is kind of slow and sets a low tone for the clip right away. Throughout the clip there isn't really any music just the characters talking there are flashes of non diegetic sound when there are flashbacks with is quite happy sounding music as it is showing us that when they were younger they were both happy. Towards the end the music is happier than what it was at the beginning before David and Laura met almost as if they had made their peace between each other and now they know nothing is going to happen between them.

Evaluation for media magazine

Evaluation for media magazine.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

When I was making my front cover I was basing it on a RnB magazine front cover called ‘VIBE’. I got my ideas from this magazine and based my front cover around this magazine. I have created this magazine to be read by a niche audience (RnB) I took the colour scheme from this magazine that were mainly blue and yellow. I thought these worked well with that magazine and that they would work well with mine. Then I had to choose a font style,

When looking for fonts I found this quite easy I wanted something big and bold, which looks like a magazine masthead should do, and I chose the font boulder that suited my magazine well. I wanted to use a few different colours on the text like in the other magazine ‘VIBE’; this is because if I made all the text the same colour certain parts would not stand out such as the sell lines which are there to attract readers who aren’t attracted by the main photo. When I was taking my photo I took it from the same magazine brand ‘VIBE’ but it wasn’t the same magazine I got my colour scheme from are the layout and I based my main photo around the photo taken on this other magazine cover, I positioned Sam (the person on my front cover) exactly how the person on ‘VIBE’ magazine was positioned with is hand up by his shoulders and looking at the camera, I wanted him to do this so he looked as natural as possible to make my front cover seem real, also I wanted him to wear a similar piece of clothing to ‘Nelly’ who is on the cover of ‘VIBE’ magazine which was a suit. I thought this would make him look stereotypical of an RnB artist. I had a small website at the bottom of my magazine beneath the barcode to make it seem more realistic.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

I think it represents RnB singers and stars in a very stereotypical way just like the rest of the RnB magazines do. I think I have produced pictures that would help show the reader that this is RnB style magazine, as Sam is dressed in a stereotypical RnB style with the suit and serious look just like most RnB singers are represented, I believe people that would buy this type of magazine would see the photos and believe that he was an RnB artist rather than something like a dance magazine, I think this because they would see RnB artists and see them as an ideal self, therefore they would dress like them. The media has meditated peoples views on how they see people, this is so it is easier for people to recognise something that they like, for example someone who likes RnB and wants to buy a music magazine wouldn’t have to look for very long as they know straight away from their mediated views on what a RnB magazine would look like because the RnB magazine would be stereotypically different and the buyer would know what he is looking for. Also I think the picture represents RnB artist at its peak as he is serious and looks cool just like any typical RnB artist wanted to keep a reputation of being cool. The fans of the magazine would know this enjoy and look up to how these artist are so cool and envy them, each genre of music has different stereotypical views and different people have different ways on who they look up to.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

As a independent company I think the magazines would be sold on a small basis, the magazine wouldn’t be advertised on the radio or television as it would be too expensive, it would be sold to small store and magazine shops, the main way this magazine would get viewers to hear about the magazine would be by readership where someone would buy the magazine and pass it on to a friend or family member. It would also get seen by the public on the internet, as there would be a website, but there would also be posters advertising the magazine and leaflets that would be handed out and posted to people, this would be the best way for the company to make money as it doesn’t have enough money to advertise on the television and radio. This is because it is a first time release from this magazine and it wouldn’t have vast resources from the start if the magazine is a hit with fans then it would have a bigger budget in the future to advertise through radio and television getting a bigger audience and would most likely be bought by a conglomerate.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

My target audience are 70 per cent males and 30 per cent females, males would be more interested in this genre of music Hip Hop, but there are a lot of females that like this genre. The age group would be from 16 to 25 year olds. The boys would be stereotypically interested in lots of fashion assertors like cap hats, baggy jeans, and baggy hoodies. Also they would probably be interested in sports like football or American football. Girls would also be very interested in fashion but they wouldn’t be dressed in the same way as girls in a Hip Hop magazine. Whereas boys would dress like the Hip Hop stars girls would not. They would probably be quite outgoing and adventurous.

How did you attract/address your audience?

I advertised my magazine on chat websites like bebo and facebook, as many people go on these websites from the age groups of mainly 14 to 25 which tends to be the age groups aimed at by RnB magazines so is a good place to start and with more people looking at this mag the bigger it will become. Also I handed out small leaflets and flyers with a picture of the cover and a few pull quotes to attract the audience.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt a lot about media, mainly about camera work and how to create a good magazine cover by using photoshop to produce good covers using photos as they work well with photoshiop and also quark which is excellent for setting out a good layout for a magazine. With the camera I have learnt how to control the focus, zoom and how to arrange people within the photo well and when taking a picture if its landscape take the picture landscape and if it’s portrait take the picture whilst holding the camera portrait.

Bauer and IPC

Bauer is a German multinational cross media company who dominates the British magazine market. They own magazines like Mojo, Kerrang and Q which are all big brand music magazines.

Niche magazines like Kerrang use this to target certain audiences and make a bigger profit than what they would with mainstream magazines as they may not attract the niche audiences. Q on the other hand is a mainstream magazine aiming for a wider target audience to bring in the profit and will publish lots of different types of music genre like RnB, pop, rap, rock and other music genres.

Readership and circulation comes in a lot with magazines as many people may not buy the magazine but may still read them, this happens a lot in waiting rooms in places like hospitals and doctors where they are there for free for us to read. Figures would show that Kerrang have 76,937 readers, these circulation figures of magazines bought would be less than how many times the magazine has been read but whilst it seems the magazine company are losing money as we are reading for free it is also a good way of advertising it just like a free sample. The demographic audience of Kerrang is a kind of punk rock look and will aim its magazine at them; the demographic also has an impact on the advertisement which takes place in the magazines and will try to advertise things that the rock type person will want not what feminine women will want like a nice shampoo. Q on the other hand will aim at a wider range a demographic and isn’t aimed at anybody in particular; it will also show a wider range of advertisements aimed at young, old, men and women as it is a mainstream magazine.
.
These magazines use cross media ownership like synergy to combine with another company for a greater outcome of profit, Kerrang for example has a CD and radio show to boost their profits in all areas as they work together. If someone listens to the radio show its more than likely they w ill buy the magazine and vice versa.

IPC Media is a leading UK consumer magazine publisher. Almost two in every three UK women and over 44% of UK men read an IPC magazine.

IPC own music magazines such as NME which are sold at a price of £2.20 this type of magazine is a mainstream magazine and doesn’t just contain one type of music genre. NME does seem to concentrate on indie though showing bands like the ‘Killers’ and ‘Kings of Leon’ quite often as they have become very popular recently and will bring in the audiences. But NME are suffering and are on their lowest circulation figures ever selling 64,000 per issue. More people of course will read this magazine through readership but it does not seem to be attracting more people and NME may need to use readership more to attract more people by giving more magazines to places with waiting rooms where people will read them when bored and maybe enjoy the magazine enough to start buying it. NME will use synergy to promote their magazine and they are involved with the Leeds Festival and will promote the Leeds festival more than what they do the Glastonbury festival.
