Bauer and IPC
Bauer is a German multinational cross media company who dominates the British magazine market. They own magazines like Mojo, Kerrang and Q which are all big brand music magazines.
Niche magazines like Kerrang use this to target certain audiences and make a bigger profit than what they would with mainstream magazines as they may not attract the niche audiences. Q on the other hand is a mainstream magazine aiming for a wider target audience to bring in the profit and will publish lots of different types of music genre like RnB, pop, rap, rock and other music genres.
Readership and circulation comes in a lot with magazines as many people may not buy the magazine but may still read them, this happens a lot in waiting rooms in places like hospitals and doctors where they are there for free for us to read. Figures would show that Kerrang have 76,937 readers, these circulation figures of magazines bought would be less than how many times the magazine has been read but whilst it seems the magazine company are losing money as we are reading for free it is also a good way of advertising it just like a free sample. The demographic audience of Kerrang is a kind of punk rock look and will aim its magazine at them; the demographic also has an impact on the advertisement which takes place in the magazines and will try to advertise things that the rock type person will want not what feminine women will want like a nice shampoo. Q on the other hand will aim at a wider range a demographic and isn’t aimed at anybody in particular; it will also show a wider range of advertisements aimed at young, old, men and women as it is a mainstream magazine.
.
These magazines use cross media ownership like synergy to combine with another company for a greater outcome of profit, Kerrang for example has a CD and radio show to boost their profits in all areas as they work together. If someone listens to the radio show its more than likely they w ill buy the magazine and vice versa.
IPC Media is a leading UK consumer magazine publisher. Almost two in every three UK women and over 44% of UK men read an IPC magazine.
IPC own music magazines such as NME which are sold at a price of £2.20 this type of magazine is a mainstream magazine and doesn’t just contain one type of music genre. NME does seem to concentrate on indie though showing bands like the ‘Killers’ and ‘Kings of Leon’ quite often as they have become very popular recently and will bring in the audiences. But NME are suffering and are on their lowest circulation figures ever selling 64,000 per issue. More people of course will read this magazine through readership but it does not seem to be attracting more people and NME may need to use readership more to attract more people by giving more magazines to places with waiting rooms where people will read them when bored and maybe enjoy the magazine enough to start buying it. NME will use synergy to promote their magazine and they are involved with the Leeds Festival and will promote the Leeds festival more than what they do the Glastonbury festival.
